Intro

As a young child I developed a deep sense of belonging riding my pony bareback on dirt roads and through wooded canopies. The love of horses inspired me to explore the intricacies of their beauty through pencil sketches. I was always involved in art through school and had a few classes with clay. It wasn’t until 5 years ago that I started exploring clay as a medium again. I found a sense of belonging once more with this medium so deeply connected to the earth and ancestry.

Statement

My first introduction to clay was in high school. An avid art student, I was taught to create coil and slab-built forms. Exploring the versatility of clay as a medium I drew inspiration from nature and my first love of horses. These are themes that are still prevalent for me to today.

In college, Ceramics 101 introduced me to wheel throwing. I quickly discovered that the pottery wheel required slow devotion. Although success was elusive, I gained valuable experience as we pugged clay, mixed dry materials and created glazes. After graduation I pursued a career in graphic design and laid down my apron.

Fast forward 30 years and homebound during the pandemic my passion was reignited. I made a gift for a cousin out of oven baked polymer clay. I enjoyed the process so much I enrolled in a wheel throwing class in the summer of 2021. One year later I bought a used pottery wheel and shortly after a secondhand kiln.

I continue to be a student of clay through classes, workshops and conferences. My favorite time is spent working in my home studio where I can hear the birds singing and watch my old horse outside the window.
